Dubai, June 27, 2012 – The parents of nine-year-old Bonie Joseph Jr, who drowned in a pool in Bur Dubai, grieve at his funeral at Mar Thomas Church in Dubai.

This was one of the hardest assignments I’ve ever had to photograph. It was a day of many firsts: first funeral, first time seeing a lifeless body and first time having trouble depressing the shutter. The fact that it was the death of a child makes it exponentially more heartbreaking. I’ll never forget the sound of the mother wailing as they tried to shut the coffin for the last time…
